Between The Ears – Songs of The Mojave Desert
BBC Radio 3
A collaboration with celebrated poet and Mojave Indian Natalie Diaz. Her award-winning poetry collection, When My Brother Was An Aztec, draws on her experiences of life on the Fort Mojave reservation, a 40,000 acre expanse spanning California, Arizona and Nevada. It’s home to more than 1000 people.
Immersing us in Mojave culture ancient and new, the result is a compelling piece for radio which reveals how, despite attempts to silence their language and culture in the 20th century, Mojave ancient mythology – the cosmic stories of their ancestors and spirit mentors – is irrevocably intertwined with life today on the reservation.
