The Museum of Imaginary Musical Instruments
ABC Radio National
The Museum of Imaginary Musical Instruments is throwing open its doors and inviting us to explore the delightful history of made-up musical contraptions. Co-curators Deirdre Loughridge and Thomas Patteson guide us between exhibition rooms, introducing us to their favourite instruments from literature, art and public imagination. As musicologists, they also imagine what these ‘fictophones’ might actually sound like. Curiously enough it’s not that difficult, many of these extraordinary instruments spookily predict the music technology of today. This will be broadcast on Radio National’s Soundproof, part of ABC’s Creative Audio Unit.
