Behind The Scenes – Ivo Van Hove
BBC Radio 4
Helen Lewis considers the work of one of the world’s most in-demand theatre directors. We meet Ivo van Hove in New York, before lockdown as he is rehearsing a new Broadway interpretation of West Side Story and in Paris where he was working with movie legend Isabelle Huppert on a production of Tennessee Williams’ play The Glass Menagerie.
Ivo’s work is marked by its intensely contemporary appeal – however old the text or screenplay and by a strong, often radical setting enhanced with video that deconstructs many of the theatrical conventions. But what’s he doing in lockdown?
